There is nothing quite like the feel of the open road whilst riding a motor bike, it is thrilling, exhilarating, and a really convenient way of beating the traffic at rush hour. The only drawback as far as I am concerned is in the winter. As I am not a hardened biker with a Harley, I like to wrap up warm and hit the not so open road in a car once the cold weather kicks in – which inevitably means sorting out car insurance, road tax and more often than not – a vehicle in the first place to drive. The trouble is, every time that spring arrives, I am so excited to get back on my bike that I think I will never need a car again – so sell it off cheap, only for winter to come back round again.

This year, I have decided to attack the problem from a different perspective and invest in a classic car that I will like so much I will want to take it for the occasional spin in the sunny seasons too. But what sort of vehicle would justify spending extra money on car insurance, road tax and the occasional service? It had to be a convertible. Only with the wind whipping past me, unhindered by a helmet would I be truly seduced into choosing four wheels over two –  there really is no denying that I am a petrol head through and through.

The winning contender was a Mercedes 280SL, and once I had invested I was in for a rather nice surprise. I managed to get cheap car insurance after joining a classic car club – which also helped me save money on parts and servicing too. Now I don’t have to have a part time passion for my four new found wheeled friend – but it is a whole heap more difficult to decide which to take out on a gloriously sunny day!
